Northern Bernese Championship
27 March 2022

Judge; Mrs Chris Wilson (Blumental)

I spent a lovely day judging this wonderful breed, even the sun put in an appearance. I would like to thank the committee for inviting me to judge. Also, thanks to my stewards Julie and Cath for keeping the ring running smoothly. Temperaments on the whole were very good with just a few exceptions. There were quite a few wide fronts which completely ruined front movement and high tails are also becoming a problem. I was disappointed to see that quite a few of the youngsters did not display the characteristics of a typical Bernese. These are the future of our breed! Please let’s have them looking like they could do the job they were bred for. That said, I was very pleased with my main winners.

Dog CC & Best in Show winner Karen Bird’s Ch Cullumbern Milano JW

JUDGE'S CRITIQUE

Veteran Dog (3 entries)
1st Gurney’s Monalou Russian Ambassador.
A good size dog with plenty of bone, strong broad head with well-defined stop and dark eye. A good depth of brisket, well angulated front and rear. Moved well.
2nd Wright & Kirk’s Materabern Good Friday.
Not as strong in the head as 1st. Well boned with a good depth of body. Slightly longer in the hocks, well angulated front and rear. Moved well for a dog of nearly 11 years. Wow, what an achievement to get him to this age and still be able to move around the ring.
3rd Grimes Stormberne Let It Snow.
Strong head with well-defined stop. A medium sized dog who presented a good overall picture. Not as good on the move as 1st and 2nd.

1st Edmundson & Hughes’ Liskarn Can’t Buy Me Love.
Good head shape, which is coming on well. Dark eye, correct bite. Enough bone for his age, good tail carriage. Movement a little erratic at the moment.
2nd Scott & Corrigan’s Mountain Crystal Silvanus To Scobern (Imp Hun)
Not quite the height of 1st, that said he is a nice shape with enough bone, well angulated all round. He let himself down on the move today, just needs to gain a bit more confidence.

Puppy Dog (2)
